Oban Trip March 2003 Fri 28th Mar 2003

After much organising and reorganising, in fact nothing was the same as the original plan, we finally got to Oban on the last weekend of March this year. JP, Mark and Andy We dived with Puffin Divers and stayed in one of their excellent self catering chalets. They have two big RIBs with inboard diesels which fly up the Sound of Mull and get you to the dive site. As it was early in the year the boat never had more than 7 divers aboard so we had influence on the dive site and plenty of room to kit up. Alex from Washington State USA, Andy, Mark and Glen Alex is the one with the bad hat, Andy would have took the prize but removed it for the camera. We did four dives over the weekend. Saturday Dive One The Hispania There was a bit of run on the wreck as we arrived and the skipper gave us a bit of a swim but the dive was good as long as you kept to the lee side. Visibility was not as good as expected and we were all sure she had deteriorated a bit since our last visit but still a great wreck dive. A hefty current had picked up on our return but we all came up the shot line. Dive Two A fish and flowers dive Not to be repeated and don’t mention the KELP!!! Sunday Dive Three The Rondo The Rondo was superb, there was absolutely no run on it whatsoever and an easy relaxed dive on her was had. The visibility in the water was improved and beyond 30m all the detritus disappeared and the full majesty of the wreck could be appreciated. The Breda We have done many dives on the Breda and she has never disappointed, there is always somewhere else to go and enjoy once you have orientated yourself to where you are on the wreck. Puffin Divers operate the RIBs on a dive taxi basis and they are efficient and punctual. The boats go out at 0900 for five hours and 1400 for five hours so it is a bit rushed to travel to and from the dive site and get two dives in. On both days our surface interval was cut to 80 minutes. So you have to take account of this for the second dive. Unusually this did, however, leave us with the rest of the day to tour Oban during daylight hours and do some of the sites. Ok it kept us out the pub for a bit. Oban is a great place to visit and there are plenty of hostelries and restaurants to get rid of your hard earned. We always seem to visit at either end of the year but to be appreciated we should go in the summer time, maybe for a week, hmmmm. |
